If you are planning a weekend in Toowoomba, there is plenty to fill your days. Great coffee, beautiful gardens, independent shopping, art, good food and some very special places just beyond town.
As locals, we thought we would share a few of the places we genuinely love and recommend. So, if you are wondering what to do in Toowoomba, consider this our little guide to spending a day or two exploring our part of Queensland.
First stop, The Baker’s Duck.
A Toowoomba favourite for very good coffee, artisan bread and a pastry cabinet that makes choosing just one particularly difficult. It is worth getting there early, picking something delicious and taking your time before heading into town.
If you are only in Toowoomba for a day, we think this is a pretty good place to start.
From there, head towards Queens Park and Botanic Gardens for a wander beneath the beautiful old trees. The best time to visit is during the Carnival of Flowers in September/October each year!
One of the things we love most about Toowoomba is just how green it is. Queens Park is especially beautiful in spring when the gardens come alive for the Carnival of Flowers, but we think it is worth a visit at any time of year.
It is also right on the edge of the CBD, so from here you can easily make your way into town for a morning of shopping.
Leave some room in your day for shopping. Toowoomba has a growing collection of beautiful independent stores, boutiques and small businesses that make wandering around town well worth it and we are all within 1km of each other.
And, of course, come and visit us at Harry and Kit.
Our Toowoomba store is filled with furniture, homewares, fashion, art and the one-of-a-kind pieces we find on our sourcing trips through India, China and Indonesia. Old timber, handmade ceramics, baskets, art, beautiful fashion and plenty of pieces with a story behind them.
Our collection is always changing, so you never quite know what you might find. Pop in, have a wander and say hello.
If you love art and beautiful interiors, make time for a visit to The Toowoomba Gallery.
The gallery represents a wonderful collection of Australian artists, with exhibitions and works spanning different styles and mediums. It is one of those places where you can happily spend time wandering, discovering artists you may not have come across before.
Art is such an important part of how we think about a home, so naturally this is one of the places we love sending people.
You cannot really come to Toowoomba without a trip up to Picnic Point.
Perched on the edge of the Great Dividing Range, the views stretch out across the Lockyer Valley and are particularly beautiful in the late afternoon.
There are walking tracks if you feel like exploring, or simply stop, take in the view and enjoy being somewhere that feels a little removed from town.
If you have a second day, head out of town and make the drive to The Dairy at Ravensbourne.
Ravensbourne is around 40 minutes from Toowoomba and the drive takes you through some beautiful countryside along the way. The Dairy is the kind of destination we think is best enjoyed without rushing. Give yourself time to explore, slow down and enjoy the surroundings.
It is a lovely addition to a Toowoomba weekend and gives you an excuse to see a little more of our beautiful region while you are here.
If you have a little more time, there are plenty of other things to do in Toowoomba.
The Japanese Garden at the University of Southern Queensland is beautiful for a quiet walk, while Laurel Bank Park is another favourite, particularly during spring.
Cobb+Co Museum is well worth a visit, especially if you are travelling with children, and if you are staying overnight, have a look at what is showing at the beautiful Empire Theatre while you are in town.
Toowoomba is best enjoyed without trying to squeeze too much in. Wander the leafy streets, discover somewhere you had not planned on visiting and allow that quick coffee to turn into lunch.
And if you are passing through, be sure to pop into Harry and Kit and say hello. We would love to see you.
