What Is an Indian Almirah?
If you have ever come across a beautiful old Indian cupboard with panelled doors, layers of worn paint and plenty of character, there is a good chance you are looking at an Indian almirah.
Originally made as practical storage cupboards, almirahs have been used throughout India for generations. Today, vintage Indian almirahs are finding a new place in Australian homes, loved for their generous storage, beautiful patina and the sense of history they bring to a room.
At Harry and Kit, they are one of the pieces we are always drawn to when sourcing vintage furniture throughout India.
What does almirah mean?
The word almirah is commonly used in India to describe a freestanding cupboard, wardrobe or cabinet used for storage.
Traditionally, Indian almirahs were used to store clothing, linen, household belongings and other everyday items. Their size and design can vary enormously, from tall, narrow cupboards to larger cabinets with internal shelving, glass panels or beautifully detailed timber doors.
Many were made as hardworking pieces of household furniture, designed to be used for years rather than simply admired.
What are vintage Indian almirahs made from?
Vintage Indian almirahs are generally made from solid timber, although the type of wood, construction and finish varies depending on the age and origin of each piece.
It is often the finish that first catches our eye when sourcing. Layers of faded paint, worn timber, old handles, original hardware and signs of past repairs give each almirah its own personality.
Rather than trying to make these pieces look new again, we love preserving the details that show their age. The knocks, marks and imperfections are part of what makes old furniture so special.
How can you use an Indian almirah in a modern home?
One of the things we love most about an antique Indian almirah is how easily it can be given a new purpose.
Use one as a linen cupboard in a hallway, additional storage in a living room, a wardrobe in a bedroom or a statement cabinet in a kitchen or dining room. Glass-fronted almirahs are particularly beautiful filled with ceramics, glassware, books and collected objects, while solid-door styles offer plenty of practical hidden storage.
They also work beautifully alongside contemporary furniture. Pairing something old with newer pieces creates a home that feels collected over time rather than everything being bought at once.
A simple sofa, linen upholstery, contemporary artwork or modern lighting can sit comfortably alongside an old Indian almirah and allow its history and character to become part of the room.
Why is every Indian almirah different?
When we are sourcing in India, we might find an almirah with beautifully faded green paint, another with old glass doors and another worn almost completely back to its natural timber.
Their proportions, hardware, timber and finishes differ, and decades of everyday use have added another layer of individuality.
It means many of the vintage Indian almirahs we source are completely one of a kind. Once that particular piece finds a home, finding exactly the same one again is almost impossible.
That is a big part of why we love them.
