Old Chinese Sieve

Sourced from Shandong, these woven willow sieves are around 120 years old. They were used to sift grain and flour and separate husks, an essential part of daily life on the farm.

Once an everyday tool in Chinese farming households, these antique willow sieves were traditionally used to sift grain, rice and other harvested crops, separating the grain from husks and unwanted material. Handwoven in a shallow, circular shape with a reinforced rim, each sieve reflects a long tradition of Chinese basket weaving, where practical household objects were made from natural materials using techniques passed down through generations.

Today, these old Chinese willow sieves make an interesting addition to a collected home. Their woven patterns and aged natural finish work beautifully as wall decor, either displayed individually or grouped together. Each sieve has a small hanging loop on the reverse, believed to have been used for hanging the sieve when not in use, and now providing a simple way to display a piece of Chinese rural history.
