Old Indian Iron Jara
These beautiful old Indian jaras (sometimes called jharas or skimmer ladles) were essential tools in traditional Indian kitchens. Hand-forged from cast iron or wrought iron, they were used for lifting, straining and serving food from large cooking pots and deep vessels over open fires. The perforated bowl allowed excess oil, water or broth to drain away, making them ideal for removing fried foods such as pakoras, puris and fritters, or for skimming ingredients from simmering curries and stocks.
Because they were made by local blacksmiths rather than factories, no two jaras are exactly alike. The decorative forged handles, hand-punched perforations and rich aged patina reflect decades of use and craftsmanship. Today, these pieces are admired not only for their history but also as sculptural decorative objects that bring warmth, character and authenticity to a kitchen, pantry or living space.
