Vintage Indian Wood and Iron Chest
This vintage Indian wooden chest was sourced in Rajasthan, its deep patina and timeworn surface bearing the marks of a life lived long before it reached us.
Known traditionally as a sandook, wooden chests such as this were once an important part of Indian households, used to safeguard textiles, clothing and treasured possessions. This piece is beautifully constructed from solid timber and reinforced with iron strapping, hinges and side handles, giving it a wonderfully architectural quality.
Today, its generous interior lends itself to storing blankets, linen or keepsakes, while its low proportions make it equally compelling as a vintage Indian coffee table or blanket chest. The aged timber, worn ironwork and irregularities developed through years of use are integral to its character.
